If you have the slightest interest in pop-culture, chances are you’ve heard of the Birkin Bag. Since its creation, the Birkin bag has become a staple of American Culture. Celebrities carry them, people who can’t afford them covet them, and music artists rap about them: it’s even been a hot-topic in shows like Gilmore Girls. Within the past 40 years, the Birkin Bag has become a sign of wealth and high social status . Despite the bag’s fame, many people do not know the story behind how it was created.

In 1984, actress, singer and songwriter, Jane Birkin boarded a flight to London. Once she sat down, she unknowingly complained to Jean-Louis Dumas ,the executive chairman of Hermes, that she could not find a bag that fit her needs as a mother. Immediately, Dumas began to sketch the bag that we know as the Birkin.

The famous bag includes a space designated for baby bottles, and enough room to fit anything a young woman could want.

Today, a standard sized Birkin Bag is only available to the ultra rich- the average price is higher than $10,000. Due to its price, the bag has been acclaimed as one of the best luxury investments, because after you splurge, the bag goes up in value.
